Skin Deep

The paintings in the Skin Deep series combine magnified details of a myriad of flowers from my garden to create hybrid images of exotic, alien-like species. I am increasingly aware of how many plants and trees in nurseries are labeled as hybrids. Although plants have hybridized for thousands of years through natural selection, the paintings allude to biotechnology and genetic modification. The paintings are intended to be alluring as futuristic perfected specimens, but the flaws, irregularities, and chance occurrences also contribute to the idealized as well as potentially devastating outcome.
