France Residency, 2005

These paintings were completed at the Chateau de Rochefort-en-Terre, in Brittany, France, an artist residency sponsored by the Maryland Institute College of Art.  The chateau was a sixteenth century country estate with a stone wall surrounding it.   Six of the paintings reference openings in the stone walls which were originally observation holes called squints.  The other six paintings depict laundry hanging on clotheslines, a daily communal routine at the chateau.  Both subjects provided a veil through which I could peer at my new surroundings.  The paintings are about my attempt as an outsider to “squint at” and interpret an unfamiliar environment steeped in beauty, history, and culture.
