Crowds, 2007

These paintings depict images of crowds of people juxtaposed with subjects from nature.  The landscapes in the paintings reference nearby environments, but the crowds are interpreted from photographs that I have been taking and collecting of people who gather for political protests, concerts, parades, religious ceremonies, tourist attractions, and sports events.  Images from the natural environment are superimposed to create a new context that refers to ideas about how our society is increasingly alienated from nature.  Irony and humor are vehicles as I see myself as a perpetrator, not simply as witness or judge.
