oil on canvas - 24"x24" each
The paintings in this series were prompted by an indelible image I witnessed while walking across campus one day. A crowd of students exiting a lecture hall swarmed past me, and I realized that the majority of them were immersed in cell phone conversations, oblivious to their surroundings, their heads bent down with the phones as appendages attached to their ears. Each painting is a single portrait of a person using a cell phone, all ages, all types, and all nationalities. The pixilated squares that float across the surface of the painting are a secondary layer of cells, referencing the digital age, alluding to both the public and private nature of the dialogue, and questioning the concept of communication in today’s fast-paced society. |
